I have just finished reading an interesting book called "Empowered" written by two Forrester Research Analysts, Josh Bernoff and Ted Schadler.
This is a follow-up to an ealrier book called "Groundswell" on use of social media.
Empowered introduces the concept of HEROes - These are Highly Empowered and Resourceful Operatives (HEROes).
The whole book is about the use of social media to unleash your employees, energise your customers and transform your business.
The book also introduces the concept of a HERO compact which is made up of the HEROes, The management and the IT department.
The main input of the book is to encourage companies to give employees space and authority to use social tools to contact with customers via social media while keeping it safe and legal. Ideas on how staff can connect to the customers can come from anywhere within the organisation. The management need to support the ideas while IT need to provide the necessary infrastructure and policies to support the idea.
The book gives examples of what initiatives empowered employees have been able to achieve. But it cautions that there will be failures along the way. Many initiatives will failure along the way. Caution is also important to protect the company from bad publicity and information security.
I recommend you read the book.
